Understand the basics of solar power

What is solar energy? Solar energy is the most abundant energy resource in the world. Each day more sunlight is available than the world can use for all its energy needs. Collecting the sun’s clean energy and transforming it into practical forms of energy is the focus of the rapidly growing solar industry. Because solar electricity generation depends on light, not heat, electricity will be produced regardless of season or temperature. On an annual basis, the City of Chicago receives 85% as much sunlight as Miami, which makes Chicago an ideal site for solar energy installations.

Currently, solar energy is delivered in two mainstream commercial forms: solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal heating systems. Simply, solar energy systems collect natural sunlight by concentrating the photons and converting the energy into usable electricity or heat.
