Follow the law and call before you dig

By Illinois law you must call the appropriate one-call system (numbers listed below) at least 48 hours before you dig or drive equipment into the ground. The one-call center will then notify ComEd and other utilities of the project. The utilities will mark their facilities.

City of Chicago

Within the Chicago city limits call: "DIGGER" (Chicago Utility Alert Network) at 312-744-7000.

Other Areas

Outside the Chicago city limits call: "J.U.L.I.E." (Joint Utility Locating for Excavators) at 1-800-892-0123 or 811. Or submit your request directly at illinois1call.com.

Damage Prevention Specialists

Be aware that serious accidents and even fatalities can result when excavators, contractors, and others do not use proper care to avoid contact with underground and above ground electrical facilities.

In a continuing effort to reduce needless injuries, power outages, and damages, our Damage Prevention Specialists aggressively investigate contacts causing damage to electrical facilities. Taking immediate action after accidental contact is made, these specialists meet with the management of companies to explain the consequences of continued unsafe and neglectful practices. They enforce aggressive policies involving collection for damages and initiate legal intervention to stop companies that have established patterns of irresponsible work practices.

The team sponsors Damage Prevention Councils and works closely with DIGGER and J.U.L.I.E. to promote safety and damage prevention.
